Deep in the Supramonte wilderness, the walls of Su Gorropu canyon rise 500 metres above your head. This guided hiking day trip takes you into one of Europe’s most dramatic gorges — a place where silence, rare wildlife and ancient rock tell a story millions of years in the making. Formed by the slow erosion of the Rio Flumineddu through the limestone heart of the Supramonte of Urzulei and Orgosolo, Su Gorropu is Italy’s deepest canyon and a place of extraordinary natural beauty. Few experiences in Sardinia match it.

What Makes This Hike Exceptional
Su Gorropu is not a tourist attraction. It is a genuine wilderness hike into one of Sardinia’s most protected landscapes. Its sheer limestone walls, rising nearly 500 metres on both sides, create a world apart — cool even in the height of summer, hushed with a silence that carries every sound for hundreds of metres, and charged with a rare sense of remoteness. The biodiversity of the canyon is exceptional: Su Gorropu holds several European records, including the presence of the Aquilegia Nuragica — a rare purple wildflower found almost nowhere else on earth — and two species of rare amphibian living in its caves and rock pools.
Tour Highlights
- Hike beneath 500-metre vertical walls of white limestone deep inside the canyon
- Spot golden eagles, mouflons, and the rare Aquilegia Nuragica — endemic to Su Gorropu
- Ford the Rio Flumineddu river on foot and enter the canyon through ancient forest
- Photography of extraordinary quality — geology, flora, fauna, light
- Small groups, licensed hiking guide, 4×4 Land Rover transport included
The Hike: Step by Step
We depart from Orosei at 8:30 am or Dorgali at 9:00 am by 4×4 Land Rover, driving along the state highway before turning onto a dirt track into the Supramonte. We leave the vehicles at a car park and set off on foot, crossing the Rio Flumineddu on foot.
The first stretch leads through a dense forest of strawberry trees and ancient holm oaks, following the base of Mount Oddeu. The approach is gradual, allowing your senses to adjust to the scale of what lies ahead. Then, at the canyon entrance, the walls open up with sudden, overwhelming force. They tower overhead, the air drops in temperature, and the sound of small waterfalls carries through the stone. This is where the trekking becomes more physical — boulder-hopping, fording shallow streams, squeezing between great white rocks dragged down by the Flumineddu over millennia. As you go deeper, the canyon grows quieter. A falling stone, a voice, a bird call echoes for hundreds of metres.
Deep inside the canyon, we stop for a packed lunch among the boulders. The return follows the same trail, arriving back in Orosei by 5:00 pm.
Wildlife and Flora in Su Gorropu Canyon
Su Gorropu holds several European records for biodiversity. Keep your eyes open for:
- Aquilegia Nuragica — a rare purple wildflower, present in only a handful of specimens worldwide, found almost exclusively inside the canyon
- Golden eagles, often seen in pairs riding the thermals above the canyon walls
- Sardinian mouflon — Europe’s oldest wild sheep — on the high ridges and limestone outcrops
- Speleomantes (geotritone del Supramonte) and Sardinian Euproctus — rare cave-dwelling amphibians living in the canyon’s rock pools and caves
- Ancient yew trees (Taxus Baccata) and thousand-year-old mock privets (Phillyrea latifolia) buttressing the canyon walls

Frequently Asked Questions About Su Gorropu Canyon
Is Su Gorropu canyon difficult to hike?
The hike is rated moderate. The approach trail through the holm oak forest is straightforward and well-shaded. Once inside the canyon you will need to clamber over large boulders and navigate uneven terrain — the guide assists at every difficult passage. A good level of fitness is required. Hiking boots are mandatory; trainers are not suitable for the boulder sections.
Can children hike Su Gorropu?
Yes, from age 6. The canyon section requires agility and some scrambling, but our guide accompanies children at every difficult passage. Most children love the adventure of it — the boulder-hopping, the sound of waterfalls, the sense of being deep inside the earth.
What are the main sights inside the canyon?
The canyon itself is the spectacle: 500-metre vertical walls of white limestone, icy streamlets threading between enormous boulders, hidden caves and potholes carved by the Flumineddu over millennia. Look for the purple flowers of the Aquilegia Nuragica growing from the rock, golden eagles above, and the thousand-year-old yew and mock privet trees buttressing the walls. The silence — broken only by water and birdsong — is unforgettable.
What is the best time of year for hiking in Su Gorropu?
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are the most pleasant seasons: mild temperatures, wildflowers in bloom in spring, vivid autumn light. Summer hikes are possible — the canyon stays remarkably cool even in July and August — but places fill quickly and we recommend booking in advance. Winter days can also be exceptional for clarity of light.
What is included in the price?
The price of 55 € per adult and 45 € per child includes 4×4 Land Rover transport from Orosei or Dorgali, the services of a licensed hiking guide throughout the day, and the canyon entrance fee. Packed lunch and water are not included and must be brought by participants (minimum 2 litres of water recommended).
How does Su Gorropu compare with Tiscali?
The two hikes complement each other perfectly and many guests do both on consecutive days. Tiscali takes you to a Nuragic village hidden inside a collapsed cave — it is an archaeological and landscape experience. Su Gorropu is a deeper physical adventure into a geological wonder: narrower, more dramatic, more demanding in terrain. Both are moderate level and both depart from Orosei.
Is the canyon accessible in summer?
Yes. One of Su Gorropu’s great qualities is that its depth and the orientation of its walls keep the interior remarkably cool even in mid-summer — temperatures inside can be 10°C lower than outside. Summer departures are popular; we recommend booking at least a week in advance for July and August.
How do I book a guided hike to Su Gorropu?
Contact Sergio Nanni directly by phone, WhatsApp or email. We reply within 24 hours and can arrange private departures for groups of any size. We can also combine Su Gorropu with a half-day Tiscali visit on a two-day programme.
