In the heart of the Supramonte of Urzulei, among limestone gorges, ancient forests and wild plateaus, lies one of the
most surprising places in eastern Sardinia: the waterfall of Sa Giuntura. Sa Giuntura is the point where the Rio Flumineddu and the Rio Orbisi meet, creating a natural waterfall between limestone walls sculpted by water over thousands of years. The white rocks, smoothed by erosion, form a small natural amphitheatre where water flows through pools and crystal-clear basins. The hike to Sa Giuntura is one of the most authentic experiences in the Sardinian Supramonte. The route crosses wild and little-frequented environments, where the silence of the mountains and the vastness of the landscapes allow you to connect with a nature that remains intact.
The hiking route: from Sedda ar Baccas to the Rio Flumineddu
The excursion starts in the area of Sedda ar Baccas, along the SS125 Orientale Sarda, one of the most evocative access points to the Supramonte of Urzulei. The trail follows ancient shepherd paths used for centuries by the herders of the Barbagia. Along the way you cross very different environments: stretches of forest, panoramic rocky terraces and deep incisions carved by water into the Supramonte limestone. One of the most remarkable features along the route is the ancient yew tree of Sedda ar Baccas, considered one of the oldest trees in Sardinia and a true natural monument. Nearby stand the ruins of a giant’s tomb, a megalithic funerary monument dating back to the Nuragic Bronze Age (around 1500 BC). Continuing down into the valley you reach the point where the Rio Flumineddu meets the Rio Orbisi, forming the waterfall of Sa Giuntura.
Wildlife: golden eagles and mouflons
The Supramonte of Urzulei is one of the most biodiverse environments in Sardinia. During the hike it is not unusual to spot mouflons moving among the rocks above the Rio Flumineddu. With some luck you may also observe the golden eagle, which nests in the rocky walls of the Supramonte and frequently soars above the gorges in search of prey. The vegetation is dominated by holm oak forests, junipers and Mediterranean scrub typical of the mountains of the Barbagia.
Practical information
The Sa Giuntura hike is rated high level and is recommended for hikers with experience of mountain trekking. The excursion lasts approximately 9 hours in total, with about 6 hours of actual walking, with departure from Orosei at 8:30 and return in the late afternoon. The best time for this hike is spring and autumn, when temperatures are milder and the waterfall is at its most spectacular. In spring, the flow of the Rio Flumineddu is at its highest, making the Sa Giuntura waterfall particularly impressive. Recommended equipment: trekking boots, at least 2 litres of water, packed lunch, hat, sunscreen and a windproof jacket. This excursion is part of the hiking experiences in the Supramonte of Sardinia, where you can also find the canyon of Su Gorropu and the sinkhole of Su Sercone.
