Cala Luna Hike (Gulf of Orosei): one of Sardinia’s most iconic beaches
Cala Luna is one of the most iconic beaches in Sardinia and one of the most spectacular destinations in the Gulf of Orosei. Located between the high limestone cliffs of the eastern coastline, this bay is famous for its long sandy beach, the large natural caves that open onto the sea and the turquoise waters that contrast with the white of the rock walls. The hike to Cala Luna is one of the most evocative hiking routes in Sardinia. The trail crosses Mediterranean scrub, follows panoramic sections above the sea and leads to one of the most celebrated beaches in the entire Mediterranean.
The trail to Cala Luna
The classic route to reach Cala Luna starts from Cala Fuili, just south of Cala Gonone. From here the trail follows the Gulf of Orosei coastline through junipers, holm oaks and spectacular viewpoints overlooking the sea. The hike covers approximately 5–6 km one way and takes around 1.5–2 hours of walking at moderate difficulty. The trail alternates rocky sections, short ascents and descents, and panoramic spots from which you can observe the limestone cliffs and the crystal-clear sea of the Gulf of Orosei.
Cala Luna beach
At the end of the trail the wide bay of Cala Luna opens up, a sandy beach framed by high limestone walls. One of the most distinctive features of the beach are the large natural caves at the base of the cliff. These karst cavities offer shade during the hottest hours of the day and create one of the most photographed landscapes in Sardinia. The beach sits at the mouth of the Codula di Luna, a canyon that descends from the Supramonte mountains all the way to the sea, creating a unique natural environment where mountain and sea meet.
The Gulf of Orosei from the trail
The hike to Cala Luna offers some of the most spectacular panoramas along the eastern coast of Sardinia. From several points on the trail you can observe the limestone cliffs of the Gulf of Orosei, the Supramonte mountains of Baunei and the turquoise waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. This contrast between sea and mountain makes the Gulf of Orosei one of the most extraordinary natural landscapes in all of Sardinia.
