Monte Irveri: the coastal viewpoint over the Gulf of Orosei

Monte Irveri is one of the most spectacular panoramic points on the eastern coast of Sardinia. Located in the territory of Dorgali, where the limestone massif of the Supramonte meets the sea, this height dominates the Gulf of Orosei, offering an extraordinary panorama over the cliffs, the Tyrrhenian Sea and the mountains of the Supramonte.

The Monte Irveri hike is a perfect introduction to the Selvaggio Blu, the most celebrated coastal trekking route in Sardinia. The landscape crossed during the excursion features many of the characteristics typical of this wild environment: Mediterranean scrub, centuries-old junipers and wide sea views.

From Osala beach to Cala Cartoe

The excursion begins at Osala beach, a few kilometres from Orosei. From here the route follows a coastal stretch characterised by dark rocks of volcanic origin until it reaches Cala Cartoe, a small hidden bay with turquoise, crystal-clear water.

This first stretch reveals one of the most striking coastal landscapes in the Gulf of Orosei and makes for a spectacular start to the hike.

The climb to Monte Irveri

From the coast the climb to Monte Irveri begins. The trail crosses Mediterranean scrub, ancient olive trees and large junipers shaped by the wind.

As you gain altitude, the panorama opens up progressively: to the north the plains of Orosei and Monte Tuttavista appear, while to the east the vast marine scenery of the Gulf of Orosei unfolds.

The 350-metre panorama and the Cuile di Sa Tintura

At around 350 metres above sea level the trail reaches the Cuile di Sa Tintura, an old shepherd’s shelter built in the early twentieth century.

Made by local shepherds with stones and juniper branches according to a traditional technique, the cuile sits in a panoramic clearing overlooking the Gulf of Orosei.

From this point the panorama sweeps from Capo Monte Santu to the south as far as Punta Nera to the north. For nature-photography enthusiasts it is one of the most complete viewpoints on the eastern coast of Sardinia.

The coastal Supramonte

Monte Irveri lies in the coastal Supramonte region, one of the most spectacular natural areas in Sardinia.

This territory is characterised by limestone plateaus, deep gorges and cliffs that plunge directly into the sea of the Gulf of Orosei. Wildlife includes species such as the peregrine falcon and numerous seabirds.

The final swim at Cala Cartoe

The excursion ends once again near Cala Cartoe, where you can swim in the crystal-clear water of the bay.

This beach, less frequented than others in the Gulf of Orosei, is the perfect finale to a day of panoramic hiking between sea and mountain.
