Cala Goloritze Hike (Baunei): Italy’s national monument beach in Sardinia
Cala Goloritze is one of the most celebrated beaches in Sardinia and one of the most extraordinary natural landscapes in the Gulf of Orosei. This small cove is located along the eastern coast of the island, at the foot of the limestone cliffs of the Supramonte of Baunei, and has been an official Italian national monument since 1995.
The Cala Goloritze hike is one of the most fascinating hiking routes in Sardinia. The trail descends from the limestone plateau of Golgo through a landscape of karst formations, ancient junipers and holm oaks, offering breathtaking panoramas over the Gulf of Orosei.
The trail from the Golgo plateau
The classic route to Cala Goloritze starts from the Golgo plateau near Baunei. The trail crosses a karst landscape of
limestone rocks, junipers and Mediterranean scrub. During the descent several viewpoints open up from which you can observe the cliffs of the Gulf of Orosei. The route covers approximately 3.5 km one way and takes around 1.5 hours downhill. The return ascent is more demanding, taking approximately 2 hours to climb back up to the Golgo plateau. Total walking time is around 5 hours.
Punta Salinas: the panoramic viewpoint at 400 metres
A highlight of the hike is the viewpoint of Punta Salinas, a natural terrace at 400 metres above sea level with a sweeping panorama over the sea, the forests and the limestone cliffs of the Gulf of Orosei. This is one of the finest photography spots on the entire eastern coast of Sardinia and is unique to this excursion within the Gulf of Orosei.
Cala Goloritze beach
Cala Goloritze has been declared a natural monument of Sardinia and is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. The cove is formed by small white pebbles and extraordinarily clear water. The seabed drops away quickly, creating intense shades of blue and turquoise. The symbol of the bay is the Aguglia di Goloritze, a limestone pinnacle rising 143 metres above the sea that dominates the cove and is one of the most iconic sport climbing destinations in Sardinia.
The Gulf of Orosei from the Golgo plateau
During the descent towards Cala Goloritze the eastern coast of Sardinia reveals itself in all its splendour. From the
highest points of the trail you can observe the cliffs of the Gulf of Orosei, the mountains of the Supramonte of Baunei and the Tyrrhenian Sea. This contrast between sea and mountain makes the excursion particularly evocative.
